The European Medicines Agency is a decentralised body of the European Union. Its main responsibility is the protection and promotion of public and animal health, through the evaluation and supervision of medicines for human and veterinary use. Terminology work for this agency in 2009 focused on EMA’s glossary of key terms which now contains more than 250 terms in all official EU languages.

The EIT’s mission is to grow and capitalise on the innovation capacity and capability of players in the fields of higher education, research, business and entrepreneurship from the EU and beyond through the creation of highly integrated Knowledge and Innovation Communities (KICs).

The European Institute for Gender Equality is an EU agency created to support the Member States and the European institutions (in particular the Commission) in their efforts to promote gender equality, fight discrimination based on sex and raise awareness of gender issues.

EFSA was set up in January 2002 as part of a comprehensive programme to improve EU food safety, ensure a high level of consumer protection and restore and maintain confidence in the EU food supply. The Centre and EFSA’s internal experts/proofreaders carried out a joint project ‘EFSA Terminology Watch’, the aim of which was to expand the existing glossaries of EFSA key terms, have them validated by the Agency and import them into IATE. EFSA independently continues to collect new terms for insertion into IATE through daily proofreading and processing of translations from the Centre.

The European Fisheries Control Agency (EFCA) is an EU body established in 2005 to organise operational coordination of fisheries control and inspection activities by the Member States and to assist them to cooperate in order to comply with the rules of the Common Fisheries Policy in order to ensure its effective and uniform application.

The European Defence Agency has been created to help EU Member States develop their defence capabilities for crisis-management operations under the European Security and Defence Policy.

The EEA is an EU agency. Its task is to provide sound, independent information on the environment. The EEA is a major information source for those involved in developing, adopting, implementing and evaluating environmental policy, as well as the general public.

The ETF was established to contribute to the development of the education and training systems of the EU partner countries. Its mission is to help transition and developing countries to harness the potential of their human capital through the reform of education, training and labour market systems in the context of the EU’s external relations policy.

Frontex, the European Agency for the Management of Operational Cooperation at the External Borders, was created as a specialised and independent body tasked to coordinate the operational cooperation between Member States in the field of border security. Frontex complements and provides particular added value to the national border management systems of the Member States. The Centre’s Maltese translators have prepared a glossary of important terms extracted from Frontex documents.

The Agency manages the registration, evaluation, authorisation and restriction processes for chemical substances to ensure consistency across the European Union. These REACH processes are designed to provide additional information on chemicals, to ensure their safe use, and to ensure competitiveness of the European chemicals industry.
