The IATE (interactive terminology for Europe) project launched in 1999 by the Translation Centre was a significant achievement for interinstitutional cooperation. With approx 8 million terms covering the 24 official languages of the EU, IATE is the largest terminology database in the world today. In 2020, its public version received 36.5 million queries and its internal version (accessible only to EU staff) received 21 million queries.
IATE has been available to the public since 2007, and brings together the terminological resources of all the EU translation services. The Translation Centre manages the technical aspects of the project on behalf of the project partners, who are the translation services of the European Commission, the Council of the European Union, the European Parliament, the Court of Auditors, the European Economic and Social Committee/Committee of the Regions, the Court of Justice, the European Investment Bank and the European Central Bank. Before the project was launched, most of these institutions had their own database of terms, whereas today all their terminology collections are combined into IATE’s single shared terminology database.
2018 represented another milestone for IATE with the launch of a brand-new version. The tool was fully redesigned using new technologies, and offered greater interoperability with third-party tools, along with a new look and feel and a focus on accessibility aspects and cross-device adaptability.
