2024 marks two decades since IATE (Interactive Terminology for Europe) became the central terminology management system of the EU. Originally launched in 1998 by the Translation Centre, IATE became a key tool in 2004, when EU institutions combined their extensive terminology resources into a single repository. Initially designed to support in-house EU translators, the system was made publicly accessible in 2007, becoming an indispensable resource for linguists, subject-matter experts and scholars worldwide.

Thanks to this joint effort, IATE has developed over the past two decades into a state-of-the-art tool for managing a vast array of multilingual terminology collections. EU terminologists play a crucial role in updating, researching and validating terms across myriad domains to ensure the accuracy and completeness of each entry. This commitment to reliability and detail have made IATE a trusted resource for specialised communication in the EU’s 24 official languages.

As IATE celebrates its 20-year anniversary, the focus remains on innovation and quality. Continual efforts to respond to new terminological needs and maintain existing content ensure IATE’s enduring value. The success of this initiative is testament to the dedication of the professionals who have shaped IATE, enhancing multilingual communication across Europe and beyond.
