Meeting with EMCDDA
On 6 July 2018, the Head of the Translation Department, Thierry Fontenelle, visited the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction (EMCDDA), which is located in Lisbon.
He met with EMCDDA’s Director, Mr Alexis Goosdeel, as well as with the Head of Communication and the Principal Editor in the agency’s Communication section.
He explained the Centre’s business model and discussed the various aspects of the rich collaboration between the two agencies, which have been cooperating since 1995 (with a production of 3 440 pages in 2017).
The seminar organised in Luxembourg in 2017 between the Centre’s team of French translators and the revisers from the Observatoire français des drogues et des toxicomanies (OFDT) was highlighted as a very successful event. The EMCDDA confirmed that this seminar had a positive impact upon the quality of the translation of the annual European Drug Report.
The collection of several hundred drug-related terms, compiled by the Centre in collaboration with the EMCDDA’s national focal points and integrated as a full collection in IATE, was also mentioned as a success story.
Thierry Fontenelle was then invited to give a presentation for the benefit of several staff members from various units. Discussions focused on the collaboration between the two agencies in the field of web translation and on the possibility of supporting the EMCDDA’s emerging needs with respect to translations into non-EU languages such as Russian or Arabic for its Eastern and Southern partnerships. It was agreed that the Centre would help the EMCDDA increase the visibility of its online glossary.
The Centre is pleased to have taken part in this fruitful meeting and looks forward to further helping the EMCDDA fulfil its linguistic requirements.
