The Translation Centre at the EAAL Conference in Tallinn

The Institute of the Estonian Language invited the Head of the Translation Department, Thierry Fontenelle, to be one of the keynote speakers at the 16th Annual Conference of Applied Linguistics (EAAL) held in Tallinn on 20-21 April 2017.

The 16th Annual Conference of Applied Linguistics (EAAL) was organised by the Institute of the Estonian Language. Some 150 participants from the Baltic countries mostly, but also from Finland, Sweden and Russia, attended the 2-day conference, and papers were presented in Estonian and in English.

The focus of the conference was language and linguistics within societies, against a backdrop of possible larger ecosystems. Languages are dynamic and complex systems that adapt to the needs of their speakers. Such phenomena have been linked to issues such as intense (economic) globalisation, discussions on international vs. national languages, the place of the Estonian language in the EU, linguistic diversity and multilingualism.

In his speech, entitled Translation and terminology for EU Agencies – new multilingual needs and challenges, Thierry Fontenelle set out the activities of the Translation Centre and discussed the Centre’s role within the ecosystem of EU decentralised agencies (which includes the Tallinn-based eu-LISA Agency). Participants also learned about the specific coverage of the Estonian language in IATE, the interinstitutional terminology database, and the importance of multilingualism in the EU ― a crucial topic on the eve of the Estonian Presidency of the Council of the European Union.
