Welcoming the European Border and Coast Guard Agency
On Thursday 6 October last, Frontex, the European agency for the management of operational cooperation at the external borders, changed its name to the European Border and Coast Guard Agency. The Translation Centre has been collaborating with the agency since it was set up in 2005.
The new agency's mandate is much broader than the Frontex mandate. The European Border and Coast Guard Agency has powers, among others, to intervene directly in emergency situations, take action in conjunction with Member States and assess potential gaps in national border management.
Given its new role and activities, the new agency's staff will eventually double the staff of Frontex. The agency can start purchasing its own equipment to deploy it at the earliest possibility in future border operations.
