Can terminology be a source of empowerment? How can we describe situations or phenomena without the right words? You could argue that if something cannot be named, it might as well not exist. Terminological resources such as the IATE terminology database and EIGE’s Gender Equality Glossary and Thesaurus can help individuals and groups find a voice in multiple languages.
The least we can all say about 2020 is that it was a year of adaptation, creativity and flexibility. And, despite the pandemic, the Translation Centre managed to operate as usual and deliver 635 269 translated pages to its clients. It also successfully implemented 98% of its far-reaching Transformation Plan 2019-2020.
As part of the Centre’s two-year transformation plan set in motion in 2019, our key objectives have been to analyse in depth the communication needs or specific multilingual projects of our clients in order to find the best and most cost-effective solutions for them while increasing the competitiveness of our services.
2020 has been the second year of implementation of the Centre’s biennial Transformation Plan, following the recommendations adopted on the basis of the external ‘Study on the Translation Centre as the Shared Linguistic Service Provider for the EU Agencies and Bodies’ conducted in 2017/2018. As the year comes to an end and we look back on what has been achieved, we can consider that we are almost there! In October, the Management Board’s working group overseeing the implementation of the plan already concluded: ‘[…], the progress achieved was really impressive, especially under the current circumstances. 98% of the Transformation Plan would be implemented by the end of the year […]’
