The Centre closed the year with a production of 588 033 translated pages. This includes 239 964 pages (40.8% of the total volume) of EU trade marks for the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO).
Considering the evolution over the past 2 years, the number of documents that the Centre translated (348 069) decreased by 5.2% compared to 2021. In addition, the year was marked by a decrease in trade mark volumes (239 964 pages) in comparison to the previous year (274 706 pages). Overall, the Centre translated a volume of 14.9% less than what was forecast by clients in the amending budget of January 2022.
Clients’ interest in the terminology service continued to increase throughout the year, which ended with a production of 993.1 person-days in terminology work. This represents an increase of 137% compared to 2021 (503 person-days). In addition, a total of 20 clients requested the translation or revision of 135 608 term list entries (58 893 in 2021). This demonstrates the importance that the Centre’s clients place on terminology work to enhance harmonisation and consistency between translated documents.
Like the previous year, 2022 was marked by the Centre’s efforts to continue investing in technological innovation to meet one of its main objectives: to increase the competitiveness of its services.
This investment in technology has allowed the Centre to offer two machine translation services to its clients – one with human intervention and the other without. The Centre produced 3 188.5 pages of machine translation without post-editing, primarily for two clients. With the introduction of the new Light post-editing of neural machine translation output in January 2022, one new service was added to the Centre’s portfolio. The 13 467.5 pages of Light post-editing of neural machine translation output represented 2.3% of the total pages invoiced in the service’s first year of existence.
In addition, the Centre produced 45 945 pages of translation using its own custom machine translation engines followed by full post-editing by the Centre’s linguists to ensure the highest level of quality for the final texts. This represented 7.8% of the total pages translated.
Among the portfolio of audiovisual services offered by the Centre, subtitling was the most requested, with 4 066 minutes of subtitles for 12 clients. By contrast, the Automatic transcription and Transcription services attracted fewer clients, with 2 661 minutes.
With the idea of helping clients make their websites more multilingual and facilitating the management of their websites, the Centre developed and implemented its own web translation module for Drupal-based websites. The number of clients using this module increased in 2021 and 2022, and discussions are under way with four more clients on the installation of the module on their websites.
As part of the Language Consultancy service, the Centre invested 380.6 person-days on analysing clients’ linguistic needs and developing specific solutions for their particular language projects. This is a service that the Centre offers in order to cover all the potential language needs of its clients.
All things considered, 2022 was a productive year in many ways. Now, the Centre is looking to 2023 to undertake new projects, continue to innovate, and further strengthen cooperation with its clients throughout the year.
