Brand-new version of IATE out now!

The translation services of the EU institutions are pleased to announce the release today of a brand-new version of the EU terminology database IATE (InterActive Terminology for Europe). IATE is a joint project of the European Parliament, the Council of the European Union, the European Commission, the Court of Justice of the European Union, the European Central Bank, the European Court of Auditors, the European Economic and Social Committee, the European Committee of the Regions, the European Investment Bank and the Translation Centre for the Bodies of the European Union.

IATE has been available to the EU institutions since 2004 and to the public since 2007. It is undoubtedly a shining example of how different organisations, which are each unique, can bring the European Union closer to its citizens. With around 1.2 million entries and over 8 million terms in the 24 official languages of the EU, IATE has become THE terminology reference not only for language professionals, but also for national experts, policy advisers, public administrations, academics and private sector companies operating across a wide range of specialist areas. The database receives an average of 50 million queries per year, which shows that it is a highly popular tool for users looking for the right terminology.

After two years of redevelopment work led by the Translation Centre, with intensive interinstitutional cooperation to define requirements and test the features implemented, the new IATE is based on state-of-the-art technology and boasts search and filtering capacities and open interconnectivity through public APIs (Application Programming Interfaces). Its scalable and modular architecture paves the way for IATE to successfully meet its users’ needs in the years to come and will turn it into the main access route for terminology management and strengthened multilingualism in the EU and beyond.

The new version of IATE has a revamped look and feel that offers easier navigation, enhanced accessibility (keyboard and screen reader support) and a responsive design for accessing the tool from different devices.

Search results offer greater accuracy due to cutting-edge technology that uses customisable language analysers, and users can search in not just the term field but also other fields. The interface for viewing the results and full terminological entries has been enhanced, with more metadata and bilingual, trilingual or multilingual display options. A search API for consulting IATE data from other applications, a user manual and general statistics on IATE are also part of this release.

We hope you will enjoy the new IATE experience.
