The Translation Centre Director, Ildikó Horváth, was delighted to be invited to give a presentation on human expertise powered by AI as part of the 2nd International Conference on Language Technologies for All (LT4All 2025) at UNESCO's headquarters in Paris.
The event was organised by ELRA and SIGUL, the ELRA/ISCA Special Interest Group on Under-resourced Languages, in partnership with UNESCO, and built on its recent initiatives to preserve cultural heritage and multilingualism through language technology. The conference theme, ‘Advancing Humanism through Language Technologies’, highlighted global efforts to empower communities with language tools, with a focus on individuals’ capabilities.
As part of the session ‘The Impact of Language Technology: Enhancing or Undermining Human Roles?’, Ildikó gave a poster presentation on how to position AI in translation as a tool, rather than an all-in-one solution. While AI can boost efficiency and reduce costs, human translators, post-editors and other specialists are indispensable for checking and adjusting AI output.
Ildikó also outlined several career profiles that form part of the dynamic, modern language services landscape working alongside language professionals, such as language tech specialists, computational linguists and infrastructure engineers. Continuously refining and feeding data back into the system plays a crucial role in quality assurance routines and the development of the tools.
As the world has become increasingly interconnected, multilingualism has become a key driver of social inclusion and progress. Language technologies are essential for enabling access to information in native languages and supporting communication across linguistic boundaries. Both the Translation Centre and the conference emphasise the vital role of human expertise in shaping a diverse and multilingual world.
