Come and join us for Europe Day 2022, which will be held on Monday 9 May from 12 pm to 6 pm in Esch-sur-Alzette (Luxembourg), one of this year’s European Capitals of Culture. Various EU translation services, among them the Translation Centre, will jointly man a stand in the European Village set up for this occasion.
9 May is celebrated by the European institutions and agencies in commemoration of the Schuman declaration of 1950, which is seen as the key event in the founding of the European Union. This year, the event will take place not in Luxembourg city as is usually the case but in Esch-sur-Alzette. This former industrial city has been chosen as a European Capital of Culture 2022 for its perfect embodiment of the capacity for urban regeneration in the European Union.
Some 90 stands located in place de la Résistance and in the Brill school grounds will welcome visitors and showcase the work of EU organisations and Member States. Activities are planned for all ages such as concerts, including by Ukrainian artists, traditional dancing, and singing. As 2022 is the European Year of Youth, a special area will be set aside for young people.
Seven members of staff from the Translation Centre, along with colleagues from the translation services of other European institutions in Luxembourg (European Commission, European Parliament, Court of Justice of the European Union, European Court of Auditors and European Investment Bank), will have a joint stand with the banner ‘Übersetzen für Europa/Traduire pour l’Europe/Translating for Europe’.
Visitors to the stand will be able to learn about the EU translation services and their recruitment procedures, multilingualism in the EU and the value of language learning. Games for children and adults alike will enable visitors to find out more about the 24 official languages of the EU (now including Irish as a fully official language!) and test their knowledge.
