In 2023, the Translation Centre closed the year with a total production of 547 737 translated pages, including 213 098 pages of EU trademarks for the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO).
Compared to the previous year, the Centre saw a considerably increased demand for terminology services in EU and non-EU languages, accounting for 388 and 332 person-days respectively. In addition, the term list service had an outstanding total of 48 101 terms in 2023.
This demonstrates the growing importance subject field experts place on such work aiming at clarifying specialised vocabulary and ensuring consistency across translated texts.
Moreover, the Centre continued its investment in technological innovation, offering machine translation services with and without human intervention. In 2022, the Centre introduced light post-editing of neural machine translation output and, despite satisfactory results at its launch, this service saw a notable fall in demand, going from 13 467 pages in 2022 to 2 388 pages in 2023. At the same time, demand for the full post-editing service grew steadily, with a total of 49 003 invoiced pages in 2023.
This trend reflects our clients’ preference for the quality, nuance and accuracy brought by the human touch.
Furthermore, transcription was the most requested product among the Centre’s portfolio of audiovisual services, with 5 283 minutes provided in EU and non-EU languages.
In 2023, the Centre delivered services to its clients on time in 99.9% of cases (99.1% in 2022). Specifically, with regard to documents, the Centre delivered translations of documents to its clients on time in 99.9% of cases. In this context, ‘translations’ include translation, editing, modification and revision, invoiced in pages. This excludes EU trade marks, as they are always sent by the contractual deadline. It is also worth noting that the Centre delivered translations ahead of the deadline in 66% of cases (58% in 2022).
Looking ahead to 2024, the Centre aims to build upon its achievements, undertake new projects, explore further the possibilities of technology within its operations, and strengthen collaboration with its clients.
